Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of a beer theft at a Chevron gas station, 10025 N.W. Glencoe Road, in North Plains, around 4:37 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, according to a news release.

An attendant told the Sheriff's Office that a man stole two case of beer in the incident, then allegedly punched the employee "in the head" during an altercation. The clerk did not suffer serious injuries.

The employee provided police with a license plate number for the getaway vehicle, which authorities said was driven by another man. Police scoured the area, but the search turned up cold.

A few hours later, around 6 a.m., another theft of beer was reported at a Hillsboro Safeway grocery store, 2177 N.W. 185th Ave., with employees describing the same two men and vehicle involved. Hillsboro police nabbed the suspects after spotting their car near Southeast Brookwood Avenue and Tualatin Valley Highway.

Jose Manuel Bernabe-Hernandez, 21, and Jonathan Varona-Nieto, 21, both Forest Grove residents, faces charges of second-degree robbery. Bail was set for both men at $250,000.

Bernabe-Hernandez has faced previous charges for resisting arrest earlier this year, and was charged with interfering with police and driving under the influence of intoxicants last year, according to court documents. Varona-Nieto has faced previous charges for unauthorized use of a car, second-degree burglary and third-degree theft.
