Mike Keeler, Vic's Auto Center - LAKE OSWEGO AUTO REPAIR INSIDERWith the heat of the summer months, you may be wondering if it's time to get your coolant serviced.

I'm not talking about topping it off or taking a peek at the fluid yourself. Consult with a professional auto shop before it's too late.

If you look in there and see something green or blue, that doesn't mean it's OK. The actual additive that prevents rust and scaling may not be doing its job anymore.

If we get a car in here at 100,000 miles that has never had its coolant replaced, it can lead to very costly repairs on the radiator, thermostat, hoses or heater core (the last one alone can cost $2,000, especially on foreign cars.)

Conventional coolant should be replaced every two to three years, which costs $100 to $150. We suck the fluid out of the cooling system and put fresh coolant in.

Even so-called "lifetime fluid" should be serviced every five years.

Radiators these days are more fragile than the old metal radiators. The systems are more fragile. Some of the parts in there are plastic. Some of the chemicals used in the old days are too corrosive on the newer systems.

Don't ignore your coolant. You can be very proactive, at little cost, to prevent big problems down the road. Bring your car into Vic's Auto Center today.
