Lake Grove's Dr. Charles Branen, Lake Grove Dental - LAKE OSWEGO DENTISTRY INSIDERDental x-rays have come a long way in the last two decades. Lower radiation exposure and much greater information have become the norm. No longer is it necessary to sit through a session of receiving 18 standard x-rays to provide your dentist a full mouth of information. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is game-changing in the field of dentistry. It has enhanced the quality of dental care and moved dentistry to the forefront of technology.

This is a technology that uses radiation in a manner similar to conventional x-ray imaging, with the difference being that cone beam images are converted into a 3-D view that can be reprocessed by sophisticated computer software. With cone beam, hundreds of "slices" of information are gathered and reassembled by software into views that allow interaction and manipulation, making what we see and our ability to diagnose far improved. It also gives us information that we can easily share with specialists of all types.

Besides creating 3-D images, it also shows us soft tissues, nerve location, airway and bone, as well as dental structures. Using CBCT we can detect lesions, the precise location of an infection, and diagnose problems related to TMJ and airway sleep disorders. The added information in these scans allows us to see fracture lines and information never before evident on standard dental x-rays.

A CBCT scan is the easiest, quickest route to being able to diagnose conditions affecting your jaw, gums, and breathing.
