A 'Kaleidoscope' of flavor
Ever since Tammy Golden's stroke five years ago, the West Linn mom has experienced occasional double vision.
"It's kind of like a kaleidoscope," she says.
Golden's lighthearted take on life has inspired the name of her new Kaleidoscope Chocolate Shoppe & Wine Bar opening April 29 at 19064 Willamette Drive, Suite B in West Linn. She has been making chocolate since 2008 — formerly under the name "Simply Sweets" — and has sold at the West Linn Farmer's market, but this will be her first brick-and-mortar shop.
A single mom of three kids ages 6, 10 and 11, Golden has been doing data-entry work for the past year and a half as she waited for the day when she could devote herself to chocolate-making full time.
"I've been dreaming of starting my own chocolate place," she says. "Now it's time to follow my dream."
Golden says she hopes to host parties at the shop and bring in local wineries for wine tasting and chocolate pairing events. She'll also have a variety of baked goods available, all made on-site.
Her gourmet chocolate truffles include flavors such as raspberry, lemon, caramel, peanut butter and espresso. She says she wants to provide a higher-end chocolate that's affordable for local residents.
A self-taught chocolatier, Golden says she learned her techniques from YouTube videos and hours of practice. "I have not been classically trained — I have been practically trained," she says. "Everyone I know has been a test subject for me at some point."
As much as Golden likes taste-testing her delicacies, she says she enjoys making them even more.
"There's something really comforting about it," she says. "I decided I need to do the thing that makes me most happy, and that's making chocolate."
