Daughter takes over at St. Josef's Winery
Nearly 30 years after helping to hand plant the vines, Tara McKnight has been named president of St. Josef's Winery in Canby. The winery is considered one of Oregon's wine pioneers, planting in 1978 and completing its first legal vintage in 1983. Josef Fleischmann, winemaker and owner says he is proud to pass the torch of the business on.
"When we started in 1978 there were just a handful of wineries in Oregon, the industry has grown up and now it's time to take it to the next level," Fleischmann said.
McKnight started in the wine business in 1989 with Thomas Distributing, a wine wholesaler in the Willamette Valley. After moving to Seattle to start a family she became the production manager at a printing goods company; which soon morphed into her own business that became one of the largest glassware providers to bars and breweries in the Northwest. After a few years of running her own shop she returned to her wine roots and the family business.
She spearheaded the marketing and sales of St. Josef's Winery for several years and as president has started an ambitious plan including a major remodeling of the winery and business. "It's exciting to be part of the next phase of the St Josef's and as a woman in the wine business I believe we can add a different perspective to the business," she said.
The winery is located at 28836 S. Barlow Road in Canby. Visit stjosefswinery.com or call 503-651-3190 for more information.
