New veterinary center offers vast services under one roof

Dr. Greg Takashima had long planned to build a new kind of animal medical facility in Lake Oswego, and now he has one at the Animal Care Group in Lake Grove.

However, as it turned out, Takashima has gotten an animal medical center that has far exceeded his original plans. Instead of just having a bigger, better version of Parkway Veterinary Hospital, which he founded 27 years ago in Lake Oswego, Takashima has been joined by five other animal medical treatment specialists.

“The standard for animal care has risen, and we wanted to go with it,” Takashima said. “We needed to have collaboration to get to that end. With one center we can share so many things, like an x-ray center and a lab. Our whole goal is to interact with each other.

“At first I thought only about myself and Parkway, but I heard that other specialists were joining forces.”

There is so much to see at the Animal Care Group’s building on 3996 S. Douglas Way in Lake Grove. In fact, for someone not acquainted with recent gains in medical care for animals, a tour of the facility is an eye-widening experience. There is hallway after hallway and room after room of special areas for cats and dogs. Perhaps the most impressive is the huge room for surgery, a panorama of the latest in pet medical treatment.

The Animal Care Group has spaces small and large in which to care for dogs, cats and other animals. Here, Dr. Martin Trerise examines a cat.

But the most memorable sight might be the underwater treadmill for dogs. This is a tank with water that allows your beloved but aging dog to work out its muscles in a way that won’t fatigue its joints.

“It lightens the load on a dog’s joints,” Takashima said. “It’s like water therapy for senior citizens.”

It also looks like an awful lot of fun for a dog.

Takashima began planning this medical wonder world for pets 10 years ago, and the ground for the project was broken in December of 2013. The big hospital has gone the extra mile in striving for sustainability, including LED lighting, organic flooring and even native species of plants in the parking lot.

The center also represents a big business advance for Lake Grove.

“It’s the first development under the Lake Grove Urban Renewal Plan,” Takashima said. “The city has been a great partner. It always wanted this project to go forward. It has been a real good collaboration with them.”

The lineup of collaborators include:

General medicine with Parkway Veterinary Hospital.

Heart specialist with Cardiology Northwest.

Surgical specialty with Animal Care Surgical Specialists.

Physiotherapy and rehab with Oswego Animal Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation.

Mobile/house call with Lake Oswego Mobile Vet.

Joining soon will be LOVE (Lake Oswego Veterinary Emergency) Powered by Dove (DoveLewis Hospital).

“We’ve only been together for 30 days,” Takashima said. “But things are working out as far as I can tell.”
