Prints Charming's Geraths charmed by his new Lake Oswego studio

REVIEW, TIDINGS PHOTOS: VERN UYETAKE - Brian Geraths is the king when it comes to shooting photos of Portland Rose Festival princesses, as he does here with Elli Simotas. He and he alone has held that job since 2000.

Brian Geraths cannot stop walking, talking or smiling when he explores his new photography studio for Prints Charming on Boones Ferry Road.

“It’s so new,” Geraths said. “I’ve only sat in this chair twice.”

Geraths got his new studio ready just in time for the array of beauty queens from the Portland Rose Festival. This is an assignment that only Geraths has been trusted with since 2000, and it has been a showpiece of Geraths’ operation. It’s no slam dunk either, because the festival board makes a new decision every year on who they want as their photographer.

“It was a divine orchestration,” said Geraths of his gig as Rose Festival Princesses photographer. His career has been marked by many divine orchestrations. Like surviving the Great Recession and meeting his wife Cathy, a wonderful girl from New Zealand. Evidently, somebody up there likes Brian Geraths.

Now a master portrait photographer in demand all over the world, Geraths began his career with the dictum: no portrait photography.

“I really wanted to get into movies,” Geraths said.

He even moved from his native Pendleton to Hollywood. But his Hollywood dreams evaporated when he saw a pimp beating up a prostitute on a street corner. Suddenly, he knew he was really an Oregon homeboy.

Geraths still had no intention of being a portrait photographer, but then he came under the tutelage of Louis M. Ver Baere.

“I was so blown away by his work,” Geraths said. “I had no idea how complex portrait photography was.”

Of course, Geraths went on to become a portrait photographer, starting his business in 1996, and he became an outstanding one who was in great demand. There were countless headshots, events, weddings, beauty queens, families, and high school seniors, of which he said, “They were my bread and butter for years.”

He also went all over the world, shooting real-life royalty such as Queen Noor of Jordan and NBA royalty like Earvin “Magic” Johnson.

Meanwhile, his studio thrived, and Geraths loved giving back to the community.

“The period of my life I made the most, I gave the most,” he said.

Then the Great Recession reared its ugly head in 2006. From a prosperous career, Geraths began a struggle to survive. Not only did his number of photo jobs shrink, he had some bad business breaks. But Geraths did survive. For this he gives the credit to Cathy.

“Without her I wouldn’t have made it,” he said. “She’s the queen.”

Another good move Geraths made was moving from Portland to Lake Oswego in 2012. He has since become one of this city’s biggest boosters and was even named the Lake Oswego Chamber of Commerce’s Rookie of the Year in 2014.

Geraths can overwhelm you with his personality and impress you with his photography. Now, with his large and beautiful new studio, his enthusiasm has reached the stratosphere.

“I’ve hit the ground running,” Geraths said. “This is the perfect location. It has such convenient access from the highway. I had looked up and down Boones Ferry for the right spot.”

Once again, fate had pushed Geraths in the right direction.
