Voices lecturer Ruth Wariner to share her tales of her Mormon childhood captured in New York Times best-seller 'The Sound of Gravel'

Ruth Wariner

Lake Oswego author Ruth Wariner will present the Voices, Inc. lecture at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Tiffany Center, 1410 S.W. Morrison St., in Portland.

She will share information from her New York Times best-selling book, "The Sound of Gravel."

Her mother's fourth child and her father's 39th, Wariner spent her childhood in a polygamist Mormon colony in Chihuahua, Mexico.

Compassionate, compelling, intimate and profound, her coming-of-age survival story is set in a belief system so fanatical that life beyond its clutches seems impossible. Her book proves that who we are as human beings is stronger than our circumstances and past.

Tickets to the event are $40 and can be purchased online at

The Voices, Inc. Lecture Series was founded in 1993 in Portland by Francine Read. The lectures are filled with insight, inspiration and intelligent talk. Over the years the series has featured the world's most interesting women and many of the hottest women speakers on the circuit today.

"The theme of the VOICES Lectures is '4 Amazing Women. 4 Incredible Stories,'" Read said. "This is our 25th year in Portland bringing women's voices to the podium. Clearly, Ruth's strong voice of resiliency is the type of stories our audience has come to expect, offering hope and inspiration proving what we have inside of us is more powerful than any external force or past circumstance."

It is not a women's issues forum but a series that addresses an array of issues as seen from women's perspectives. Both women and men are welcome to participate. Speakers say the audiences are the best; warm, educated and eager to participate.

While the core business of Voices, Inc. is to produce the Voices Lecture Series, a portion of the company is dedicated to brokering women speakers through the website, specializing in women speakers, trainers, consultants and celebrities.
