The Art of Quilting to open tomorrow
The Arts Council of Lake Oswego is presenting The Art of Quilting April 19 through June 14 at the ARTspace Gallery, 510 First St. in Lake Oswego.
The exhibit includes the quilting of six artists, each bringing a different technique and design style ranging from modern to traditional, mixed media and 3-D objects. The artists include Dianne Kane, CarolAnne Olson, Judith Phelps, Mary Kay Price, Linda Reinert and Hedda Wright, exhibiting together as The Storytellers. The group was formed to continue the tradition of creating quilts that present visual stories, whether personal or universal. The quilts on display are a selection of works from past projects and educate the public that quilting is a form of art.
The exhibit illustrates the diverse techniques and artistry reflected in contemporary quilting through a journey of color and inspiration. The show opens with a reception April 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
First Friday receptions will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. May 3 and June 7, which include appetizers, beverages and discussions with the artists.
"This show presents the diverse nature of these artists based on their experiences, imagery and ideas," said Stephanie Johnson, Arts Council public art and program manager. "Their narratives bring out the social and cultural activity of sharing stories for purposes of entertainment, education or cultural preservation. The show appeals to all ages and will be a wonderful way to educate the public on this unique media."
