Ten Grands Piano Competition
Portland pianist, composer and philanthropist Michael Allen Harrison invites pianists ages 10 through 18 to submit an audition via YouTube for a spot to perform in his Ten Grands concert this spring.
Auditions are due by midnight Feb. 22. The top 10 performers will compete in a live competition at 2 p.m. March 8 at The Old Church Concert Hall in Portland.
The first-place prize for the competition is a $5,000 scholarship and a solo performance in the Ten Grands concert. Second-place prize is $2,500 scholarship and third place is $1,500 scholarship; fourth- and fifth-place prizes are $500 scholarships each.
All YouTube auditions must be new and created specifically for the audition. They should include an introduction by you, your age, where you go to school and a little bit about the piece you are playing. If the piece is longer than three minutes make edits to fit the timeframe. All genres are welcome.
Sign up for annual Shamrock Cruise on March 15
S & A Irish Entertainment and Events is again organizing a Shamrock Cruise aboard the Portland Spirit from 2:30-5:30 p.m. March 15. The three-hour cruise on the Willamette River will feature live Irish music and dance.
The Portland Spirit is moored at 110 S.E. Caruthers St. in Portland, next to OMSI.
"Boarding starts at 2 p.m. Embark at 2:30 p.m.," said Sam Keator, organizer of the event. "First deck we will have Dreos with Eliot Grasso, Brandon Vance and Glen Waddell playing the whole cruise."
Keator will be calling ceili (dancing) from 3:30-4:30 p.m. There will be a bistro on the first deck and the band Crumac will play the duration of the cruise on the second deck.
"Rob Barrick will be piping away as we board from the sundeck and roaming on the first and second decks through the three-hour cruise and as we debark at 5:30 p.m.," Keator said.
Disjecta receives grant
from Andy Warhol Foundation
Disjecta Contemporary Art Center in Portland has been awarded a $80,000 grant from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
The grant is in support of Disjecta's programming over two years, including the Curator in Residence program, the Portland2021 Biennial, and more.
Disjecta is receiving multiyear support for the third time from the foundation, having been awarded grants in 2012 and 2015.
In accordance with Warhol's will, the mission of The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts is the advancement of the visual arts.
The foundation manages an innovative and flexible grants program while also preserving Warhol's legacy through creative and responsible licensing policies and extensive scholarly research for ongoing catalogue raisonne projects.
To date, the foundation has given more than $200 million in cash grants to over 1,000 arts organizations in 49 states and abroad and has donated 52,786 works of art to 322 institutions worldwide.
