Students and staff talk about how returning to school went last week

Editor's Note: The Lake Oswego Review is doing a regular Heard Around School collection of quotes from students and staff. Here is the second installment from Lakeridge Junior High School about the upcoming school year:

  • “The first week of school went very smoothly. We were very pleased. We got a lot of positive input from students and parents. We fed over 1,000 people at our back-to-school night barbecue, which is our biggest group on record. I think in years past it’s been in the 800s. (The barbecue) is a longstanding, annual tradition before our first LO home football game. … We have an amazing group of parent leaders in our parent club this year. … Our kids are doing great; our kids are all happy. We’ve had a great start to the year.”

    — Principal Robert Caplinger

  • “I love being back with the kids. I miss them when they’re gone over the summer. For me, (what I like most) is connecting with each one of them.”

    — Rebecca Cohen, seventh-grade counselor

  • “It’s such an optimistic time for me, the parents — and the kids who are back at school.”

    — Jenna Blancher, teacher

  • “The teachers are really nice. … This school is smaller (than my previous school) so it’s easier to know where to go.”

    — Misha Bulanenko, seventh-grader at LOJHS and former student at Jackson Middle School in Portland

  • “This is the first time I’ve actually been to a public school. I’ve been home-schooled my whole life.”

    — Nicholas Newman, seventh-grader at LOJHS

  • “Last year, I was at a really small school with only 38 students in the junior high, so this is really big for me. I’m getting used to the school structure, but I think I should make some friends. I’m pretty excited to meet new students.”

    — Lily Huynh, eighth-grader at LOJHS

  • “At first I was nervous, but it went OK.”

    — Amanda Lopez, eighth-grader at LOJHS

  • “I have a lot of good people in my classes and a lot of good classes.”

    — Leah Mize, eighth-grader at LOJHS

  • My favorite class “is environmental research. The teachers are really good. I just like it.”

    — Howard Chang, seventh-grader at LOJHS
