St. Mary’s students are National Merit honorees

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has recognized 12 young women from St. Mary’s Academy — two of whom are Lake Oswegans.

Portland-based St. Mary’s Academy’s 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists included Alannah Maynez of Lake Oswego. The private Catholic school’s 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Students included Emma Connelly of Lake Oswego.

This school year’s competition started in 2014 when 1.5 million juniors took the PSAT, a pool from which 16,000 semifinalists were chosen. The semifinalists can continue in the competition to be among 7,400 winners. The awardees will be announced in spring 2016.

A committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors choose scholarship recipients based on their academic records, difficulty level of subjects studied and the grades earned, scores from two standardized tests, leadership in school and community activities as well as an essay and a recommendation from a high school official.
