Seven graduating seniors have been awarded scholarships from the Rotary Club of Lake Oswego.
"Our scholarship recipients have earned these scholarships by demonstrating both academic excellence and school leadership," Rotary president Scott Havens said. "Further, these students have transcended the boundaries of their traditional school environments and reached out to make a difference through service to their classmates and to their communities. We are proud to honor these students and to offer them these scholarships."
Mitchell Parker from Lakeridge High and Dalia Liu from Lake Oswego High are this year's Rotary Merit Scholarship recipients. The Rotary Merit Scholarship — valued at $2,000 — is designed to encourage academic excellence. Particular emphasis is placed on character traits, scholarship, leadership and personal accomplishments in school and in the community.
Sofie Fashana of Lakeridge and Ari Vest of Lake Oswego High School are the first recipients of the Bigelow Memorial Scholarship — a new Rotary Scholarship — named for past Rotary president and publisher of the Lake Oswego Review, Bob Bigelow. This scholarship honors students who have faced significant challenges in pursuit of educational success and is valued at $2,000
Anna-Marie Guenther from Lakeridge, Michael Murray from Lake Oswego High and Madison Jefferis from La Salle Prep are each recipients of the Rotary Service Above Self Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to students who have made a difference in school or the community by their acts of service, and who have given freely of themselves to help others.
These three scholarships — valued at $3,000 — are funded by the rotary's Service Above Self: Educational Excellence (SASEE) awards program and are named for citizen recipients of those awards — Elizabeth Welsh, Ted Ricks, Becky Owens and Cyndi Spear.
