Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task force is expected to meet once a month for about six months

After the City Council voted unanimously May 21 to establish a new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force, applications to join the task force are now being accepted.

The group, according to the City, will "identify barriers to participation on the City's boards and commissions, and identify methods by which to increase the applicant pool for City job openings." Once it is formed, the task force is expected to meet at least once a month for six months.

The City identified 10 "underrepresented" groups that will have a place on the task force. Those include: older adults (55 and older), youth (18-25 years), people with disabilities (including caretakers), women, people of color, parents, business owners, the LGBTQ community, members of faith/religious organizations and "socioeconomic."

There will also be a City Council liaison on the task force, so theoretically there will be a total of 11 members.

"However, if one candidate represents more than one group, the interview panel can choose to reduce the number of people that will serve on the DEI Task Force," Assistant City Manager Megan Phelan said. "(They can also) select more than one person to represent a specific group, or add additional task force members should it be discovered that certain demographics were not being represented."
