LOSD's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee to meet July 25
The Lake Oswego School District's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Accountability Committee will hold a meeting Thursday, July 25 from 3-5 p.m.
The committee has been guided by David Salerno Owens, the LOSD's director of equity and strategic initiatives, and has been meeting monthly since August 2018 to discuss how to improve district experiences for people of color, those with disabilities and other minority groups in Lake Oswego.
The DEI Accountability Committee was created to examine the district's strategic plan and identify places for improvement. Members looked at data and best practices from peer districts, audited district policies through an equity lens and looked for ways to embed equity into curriculum and practice.
On Thursday, June 6, the DEI Accountability Committee presented a final draft of an equity policy to the LOSD school board, who approved it unanimously. This is the first time the district has ever had such a policy in place.
At the upcoming July 25 meeting, the committee will go over meeting dates for 2019-2020 school year, review their charter and the group's rules of order, discuss the structure and process of voting for future leadership positions (2018-19 co-chair Anushka Nair has graduated and will be leaving Lake Oswego for the Michigan Institute of Technology), and work in their respective subcommittees. The policy team will discuss possible policy revisions, while the workforce team will discuss staff and administrative training through an equity lens.
The DEI Advisory Committee Meeting will take place Thursday, July 25 at 3 p.m. in the LOSD's staff development room (2455 Country Club Rd, Lake Oswego).
