Karen Bowerman sits on the Lake Oswego City Council

by: SUBMITTED - BowermanIt was a strong race, but Lake Oswego City Council member Karen Bowerman lost her bid for Clackamas County Commissioner to incumbent and moderate conservative Paul Savas during Tuesday's primary election.

Bowerman claimed about 35 percent of the vote to Savas' 51 percent. She also faced off against Rick Best for the Position 2 seat.

Bowerman received an endorsement from current Clackamas County Chairman John Ludlow, who released a statement in April attacking Savas as a "frequently confused and ineffective commissioner." Ludlow predicted Bowerman would be an "effective steward of the county's tax dollars."

Bowerman, who holds a doctorate in administration from Texas A&M University, decided on her run for commission after less than a year on the City Council. She did not respond to a request for comment by press deadline.

“I’m certainly pleased that it’s over so I can again focus fully on initiatives for the county,” Savas said on election night. “People are tired of the rhetoric and disruption and dysfunction, and that’s what I’ve been focusing my campaign on and focusing my whole past four years on.”
