An alleged mail fraud ring based in the Portland area has hit a number of Lake Oswego homes.

Canby Police Lt. James Murphy visited some of the victims last week, and one resident of North Shore Drive said he was told his mail was among the items that had been stolen.

“We’ve gotten various cards with charges appearing around the country, and I can’t tell if they stole more than one day of mail,” the homeowner said. He asked that his name not be used until he can place fraud alerts on all of his credit cards.

“The ring is apparently fairly sophisticated," he said, "and the Canby police said they hit every person on North Shore who did not have a locking mailbox.”

Murphy said a large volume of stolen mail was discovered when police executed a search warrant in Portland.

“We were investigating identity theft, mail theft, forgery and distribution of methamphetamine,” Murphy said. “During the course of that search warrant execution, we located large amounts of mail with subjects everywhere from Lake Oswego, Damascus, Boring and Canby to Washington (state).”

He said his department has so far identified and spoken to approximately 30 individuals whose mail has been recovered. Potential victims resided in both houses and apartments, and many of them even had locking mailboxes.

While the Canby Police Department is reaching out to those whose mail was recovered, Murphy urges those who suspect they might be a victim of mail fraud to contact their local law enforcement agency.
