MAIERThe Rev. Raymond Harold Maier, retired pastor of Lake Oswego United Church of Christ (Congregational), died June 8. He was 83.

Maier served the Congregational church on Country Club Road from 1964 to 1985, as well as congregations in Portland’s University Park, Hillsdale and northeast neighborhoods. He helped develop the Lake Oswego community, serving as a board member and president of the Lake Oswego Chamber of Commerce and helping to establish the Lake Oswego Adult Community Center.

Born on July 22, 1931, Maier was raised in northeast Portland’s Volga German community of immigrant parents who were among the last to emigrate to safety prior to World Waw I from Russia. The community dissipated by the end of the 1960s.

Maier remained committed to ministry in northeast Portland during its racial and economic transition. He worked to develop affordable housing and services for thousands in Portland and Oregon through Northwest Housing Alternatives, which he founded; as a board member of the Retirement Housing Foundation and 300 Main in Estacada; and as an affordable housing consultant for Portland’s Model Cities Program.

Maier also served as vice president of development for Cascade College, now Portland Community College, and as dean of admissions for Seattle Pacific University.

In retirement, he worked in mental health as chaplain for Cedar Hills Hospital and for Child and Adult Intervention Services in treatment of sexual abusers.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 17, at Hillsdale Community Church, United Church of Christ, located at 6948 S.W. Capitol Hwy., Portland.
