Koerner comes to Five Spice after leading the kitchen at the Peruvian restaurant Andina in the Pearl District, where he served as executive chef for three years. He grew up in Pilot Point, Texas, on his family's working ranch.

"I grew up tending a garden and raising chickens, beef and pork," he says. "I spent one summer helping wrangle cattle in the 115-degree heat and decided I'd rather be inside."

As a 14-year-old, he took a "dishwashing gig" and rose through the ranks, thus beginning his culinary career.

Koerner attended culinary school at El Centro in Dallas, Texas, and gained experience in many of the city's best restaurants, including Nonna, where during his tenure as sous chef the restaurant was praised by Bon Appetit magazine and The New York Times. His tenure in Austin at 2 Dine 4 Catering saw him leading a large culinary team as well as cooking intimate dinners for the Supper Friends dinner series. In 2015, he moved to Portland to join the family-run Andina.

Koerner says he doesn't "have a lot of boundaries" at Five Spice and is looking forward to "dreaming and creating" special dishes and building the brunch program with fresh foods and classic dishes.

Five Spice is located 315 First St. in downtown Lake Oswego. Visit http://www.fivespicerestaurant.com or call 503-697-8889.
