Anushka Nair named LO's 2019 Amazing Kid
Lake Oswego High School senior Anushka Nair is a National Merit and U.S. Presidential Scholar finalist.
She's a violinist, a poet and the coach of multiple all-female robotics teams. Alongside all that, she also finds time to participate in speech and debate and took 31st place at the National Speech and Debate Original Oratory category in 2017.
But what matters most to Anushka is serving others and standing up for diversity and equity within the Lake Oswego School District. And that, above all else, is what makes her Lake Oswego's 2019 Amazing Kid.
Anushka joins more than two dozen other kids from around the Portland metro area who will be honored at Pamplin Media Group's Amazing Kids event Monday, April 29 at OMSI. Profiles of each Amazing Kid will be found in a special section in next week's newspaper.
Anushka says that from an early age, she always listened to her inner voice telling her to serve others. The cause closest to her heart is being a lifetime champion of diversity, equity and inclusion, especially in the Lake Oswego School District.
Anushka founded a group called Enough is Enough at Lake Oswego High School after identifying the need to improve the culture of diversity in the school and community. She later joined LOSD's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee and was elected co-chair.
"We need to create an environment that fosters tolerance and acceptance, so no one feels like they don't belong and so everyone can proudly say that they are a part of the Lake Oswego community," she says.
