Kevin Hanna and Travis Olson are bringing a new kind of mortgage lending experience to Lake Oswego with Churchill Mortgage.

The two former 15-year executives of Directors Mortgage — along with their third partner Jeff Miller — have started are leading the expansion of Nashville-based Churchill Mortgage into the Pacific Northwest where they will manage operations in both Oregon and Washington.

They've decided to located their business in downtown LO, where their expertly designed new space feels more like your own living room than the typical financial office.

"For us, we wanted to build something that's unique to this marketplace," Hanna said. "We want to lead by promoting debt-free homeownership for our clients."

According to Hanna and Olson, Executive Vice President and Senior Vice President, respectively, their firm's philosophy is people over profits. They want to cultivate a business culture that's less transactional and more relationship based. Their primary focus is to take care of people in a way that fosters fiscal responsibility.

"It's a matter of doing what's right no matter what," Hanna said. "Through partnerships we're developing relationships — new and ones we've had a long time. It doesn't have to be a deal tomorrow but it could be a relationship for life."

Both residents of Lake Oswego, Hanna and Olson are confident about their ability to prioritize people over profits because many of the people who they'll serve moving forward are community members themselves. It's the same people they'll see on the soccer field as their kids play, in line at the grocery store and out at local events.

"There's no place we'd rather be than here in Lake Oswego," Olson said.

The Churchill Mortgage office located at 135 A Avenue opened earlier this year, but over the past month and a half the office has transformed into an welcoming and cozy space.

Instead of stuffy cubicles with desks, the space features a large wooden table with comfortable bar stools where you can sit and talk to one of Churchill's representatives in a low-pressure environment. A small kitchen at the far end of the room will be used by local chefs brought in to collaborate on monthly events they plan to start hosting in the near future.

According to Hanna and Olson, they're also planning to rent out the space to community groups that are looking for places to host events. It's all part of their mission to embed themselves within the community and live their mantra of prioritizing relationships and people over commissions and profits.

"We want to leave them better for the encounter, whether they interact with us or anyone in our company," Hanna said.

"And you can't build that (type of culture) in a transactional environment," Olson added. "This is a relationship business, and for many people we encounter on a regular basis, (buying a home) is the biggest purchase they'll make in their life, and we need to handle it in such a way."

One of the stamps of approval that has Hanna and Olson excited about becoming a part of the Churchill Mortgage family is the endorsement of financial guru and talk radio host Dave Ramsey.

Ramsey and Churchill Mortgage CEO and founder Mike Hardwick grew up together and maintained a connection throughout their careers. According to Hardwick's book "Keep Chopping Wood: A Pastor's Son Who Had It All, And Then Regained True Wealth," his adherence to Ramsey's principles of striving to be and remaining debt free are huge part of his success and the success of Churchill Mortgage.

"What you can qualify for and what you can afford are often times two different things, and that's the area where responsibility becomes key in what we do," Olson said. "We can most likely qualify you for a lot more than you can afford. When my commission paycheck is dictated by the loan I give you, in a lot of instances for individuals in this business it makes it easier to justify in their minds when at the end of the day that's not the best thing for you. That's where it comes down to people over profits."
