LOSD announces makeup plans for May 8 school cancellation
On the heels of the Lake Oswego School Board's unanimous decision — at the urging of Superintendent Michael Musick — to close school May 8 during a planned "day of action" that will be attended by many school employees, the school district detailed its plan to make up the missed instructional time in an announcement Thursday afternoon.
According to Musick, the next five Thursdays in May and the first Thursday in June will be full instructional days with no early release. Teachers will conduct Professional Learning Community (PLC) work each week after students are dismissed.
"In addition, Friday, June 7 will be a full day of school for elementary and junior high students instead of a half day of school," Musick said. "High school students will follow their regular finals schedule. Make-up finals and Extended Semester will start immediately after the last exam."
The School Board made the decision to close school May 8 during an emergency meeting April 23. The "day of action" is being organized by the Oregon Education Association and is part of a series of rallies and protests to demand more K-12 education funding from state lawmakers. Teachers and school district employees across the state are planning to skip work to "send the message that it's time to fix the funding shortage in our schools," the association stated.
On Thursday the district also released specifics on its plan for May 8. AP tests will be conducted as planned, as will athletics, activities and community school programs. Preschool and pre-kindergarten will not be held, and neither will Strings. The Extended Day/Child Care Program will be open only at Palisades Elementary from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
"It is essential that we know how many students will be present so that we can adequately staff to meet the student capacity," Musick said. "Please let the front desk staff at Palisades Extended Day Program or at Lake Grove Extended Day Program know if your child will be present on May 8. Please notify front desk staff by Friday, May 3."

Those with specific questions about school programs should contact their school's principal, Musick said.
