Fitness enthusiast Lindsay Barney launches program she developed as a busy mom to get fitness done

Looking for a new fitness routine? LEVEL interval training studio is open at The Windward in downtown Lake Oswego. Founded by fitness enthusiast Lindsay Barney in 2018, LEVEL classes combine aerobic and anaerobic exercises, state-of-the-art equipment and endurance training to achieve a balanced, complete full-body workout in one hour.

"My husband and I have traveled extensively for his career as a professional athlete, and I found it hard to stay fit and healthy on the road," she said. "I was always looking for a great workout that would fit into my busy life as a new mom."

Barney enjoys long-distance running and hadn't focused much on strength training. When she did she noticed her pace increased and she recovered more quickly.

"That was a game changer for me," she said. She developed LEVEL workouts to include balanced, one-hour, ever-changing, full-body workouts that complement all parts of the body. Classes are broken into four 13-minute intervals; two timed treadmill sessions with differing speeds and inclines, alternated with two intervals of floor exercises and hand weights with an emphasis on endurance-based strength training; the four interval sessions are followed by a cooldown and stretch. Each class is easily adjusted based on personal strength and comfort, making it suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

"I've done my research and interval training is simply the best way to achieve a fit, balanced body," Barney said. "You don't have to go all out, all the time. It's better for your heart and body to ramp up and then come back down, give your body some recovery after sprinting. So you work intensely and then let your body calm down with the weights and floor work."

According to Barney, interval training boosts your metabolism to burn more calories and fat than continuous aerobic training.

Childcare is always available (except at 6 a.m. classes) as Barney knows how important it is for mothers to be able to drop in for classes. Children enjoy activities while parents are working out.

"When LEVEL launched it was my goal to provide a place where people can come as themselves and leave feeling even better, both physically and mentally," she said. Barney plans to work with all age groups, and hopes to encourage more teens and seniors to become active.

LEVEL is located at 145 Evergreen Road in The Windward in downtown Lake Oswego. Classes are offered Monday through Saturday, with the schedule released Monday at noon. Pricing can be found on the LEVEL website, introductory classes start at $20. Childcare is offered for children ages three months and up for $5.
