Program kicking off with events this weekend, will run from June through August

PMG FILE PHOTO - Lake Oswego's popular Summer Reading Program kicks off once again on Saturday. The coming of June means it's time for Lake Oswego's Summer Reading Program.

The fun is set to begin a day early on Friday, May 31, as the Lake Oswego Library hosts After Hours at the Library from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This event, one of two "blast off parties" for the Summer Reading Program, is geared toward teens entering grades 7-12 and it will include karaoke, Henna tattoos, free books and prizes while also giving kids an opportunity to sign up for the program. Saturday, June 1 at 2 p.m., the library will host a performance by the Grammy-nominated family music band Recess Monkey, where sign-ups for the program will also be available.

The Summer Reading Program runs from June 1 to Aug. 31 and is intended for all residents, from pre-readers to adults. Participants keep a log of their reading throughout the summer while also taking part in special events. A summer party is held at Rossman Park as the program comes to an end; this year, it will be Aug. 14 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Age-specific programs include the Read-to-Me Club for pre-readers (which consists of reading to a child for at least 10 minutes during 25 days this summer), A Universe of Stories for readers entering grades K-6 (reading at least 20 minutes a day for 25 days) and the Teens program for grades 7-12 (prizes for those who record at least 15 hours of reading.
