The Springs at Carman Oaks fundraises for memory care on the summer solstice.

PMG PHOTO: AVA EUCKER  - Family and friends gather to support Alzheimer's fundraising.The Springs at Carman Oaks, an assisted living center, held a fundraiser for the Alzheimer's Association on Friday June 21, the longest day of the year.

"It is a very long day when you are living with Alzheimer's or when you are caring for somebody," said Lisa Oetken, life enrichment director. "You are aware of each hour and so the longest day of the year is the perfect time to promote fundraising for Alzheimer's."

PMG PHOTO: AVA EUCKER - Resident Patty Melrose said she is glad to be helping at the event.The Springs welcomed donations from 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at a table outside the assisted living building. Donuts, yogurt and ice cream were given, along with smiles from behind purple banners and balloons.

Funds will go to research,education and support services through the Alzheimer's Association.

The Springs currently has 16 people in memory care, and the majority have Alzheimer's. This is the second year The Springs has hosted this event. PMG PHOTO: AVA EUCKER  - Anjie Lambert, life enrichment coordinator proudly smiles and wears purple to support Alzheimer's research.

"It is really important to continue to be of service and connected to the greater community and this is just a wonderful opportunity," Oetken said.

Extra treats were brought to construction crews at Mercantile Village as well as to the Lake Oswego Fire Department with the goal of spreading love and awareness of a disease that makes each day feel elongated.
