Ingrid Neuhofer Dohm showcases her floral and landscape paintings at location on 2nd Street

As footsteps grow louder within Ingrid Neuhofer Dohm's spacious studio on 2nd Street in Lake Oswego, the artist is busy painting a tart that sits amid a lush landscape. So immersed in her work, Neuhofer Dohm doesn't hear a sound until a voice accompanies the steps.

Peacefulness, she said, is what she loves most about painting.

"I go to a different world, almost, when I paint," she said.

Neuhofer Dohm — an Austria native who spent decades in Illinois before moving to Oregon — opened her studio at Suite 459 on 2nd Street a few weeks ago. Her studio is filled with acrylic landscape and floral paintings that range in price from a couple hundred to a few thousand dollars. She welcomes art lovers and artists alike.

"If you have some interest in art, it's always exciting to see new art. I remember as a student, my professor always said to go to as many museums and galleries as possible to start thinking about art," she said. "I would like to have people who come in and maybe they want to buy it. There's many reasons to buy a painting. Either you bought a new house and need new paintings for the wall, or you want to change it, or you just love art. It's pretty."

Neuhofer Dohm studied art at Rockford University in Illinois and subsequently established herself as a well-known artist in Rockford, she said. She's also had studios in Austria, Switzerland and Germany.

Neuhofer Dohm moved to Lake Oswego to reunite with her daughter, who got a job at Adidas. She said she is eager to get to know the community and make a name for herself in the local arts scene.

"I feel it's not fast enough. I want to do it overnight and it just doesn't work that way," she said.

Neuhofer Dohm added that she has loved flowers and natural landscapes ever since summers in her youth spent climbing mountains, swimming and fishing in her home country. Moving to Oregon has provided her both with new inspiration and a reminder of her roots. Once she can fully visualize a piece, it doesn't take her long to actualize it.

"I love the forest. The trees are so amazing here. Actually it reminds me of home in Austria. We have a lot of rain, a lot of forests and everything is green," Neuhofer Dohm said.

Along with attracting customers to her shop, Neuhofer Dohm hopes to start watercolor classes at her studio. There, she hopes to help budding artists find the same tranquility she has attained.

"Even if you do it for a short time yourself, it's the best thing you can do because you really forget yourself," she said. "You take this brush in your hands and you forget all your problems until you put it down and, whoops, they come back."

Neuhofer Dohm is at her studio intermittently but lives nearby. She advises people to call her at 815-519-6492 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. You can also visit her website at http://www.ingriddohm.com.
