Readers' letters: Weighing in on local races before Election Day
Daniel connects on many levels
Daniel is a dedicated husband and father. He is a successful small business owner. Daniel is the son of Vietnamese immigrant refugees who champions diversity. He is also a proud American. Daniel is a passionate volunteer for many organizations and a mentor for many individuals (like myself). Daniel is an articulate speaker but he is even better at listening. For all of these reasons, Daniel connects with me on many different levels. He is an inspiration to my family. At a time where we are all looking for authentic, kind, and caring leadership … I'm proud to support Daniel Nguyen for State Representative.
McMullen is right choice for county clerk
Catherine McMullen's candidacy for Clackamas County Clerk came to my attention in June 2021. I approached our interview with a healthy dose of skepticism. Afterall, it is a managerial position unlike most elective offices which are policy focused. I learned she has both an Executive MPA from Portland State University and direct managerial experience.
Then I asked why Catherine wanted to run. As a state elections administrator certified by the Oregon Association of County Clerks, she has insights into Clackamas County operations that caught me off guard. Her familiarity with technology used at the state level and by other counties would benefit the citizens of Clackamas County, where Catherine and her family have lived for 2 years.
Beyond her ability to run an efficient accurate operation, Catherine's passion for voter inclusion was amazing. She started the voter registration program Clackamas Voice in 2021. Her recent op-ed in the Pamplin press demonstrates her awareness of issues facing eligible voters as well as her desire to overcome legitimate obstacles.
I believe Catherine would serve all the citizens of Clackamas County well as their Clerk. Catherine will have my vote come November 8.
Nguyen is best choice for state representative
I am proud to support Daniel Nguyen for state representative for House District 38. I had the opportunity to get to know Daniel when he served as the city council liaison to the Lake Oswego Youth Leadership Council, of which I was a member. I found Daniel to be a compassionate, effective and collaborative leader at all times. He consistently prioritized results over rhetoric and sought solutions that were simultaneously principled and pragmatic. It is for these reasons that I am confident in Daniel's ability to make progress on the many stubborn and serious challenges that lay in front of us: homelessness, climate change, unaffordable housing and ever-widening education gaps in our schools. Moreover, as a local business owner, Daniel will bring a vital and often-missing perspective to the legislature. Despite small businesses making up the backbone of our state's economy, they are rarely welcomed or included at the decision-making table in Salem. Daniel will be a fair, open-minded ambassador between the business community and government. In the final analysis, Lake Oswego needs a state representative who is skilled in translating good intentions and innovative ideas into tangible, enduring policies that will make a difference in people's lives. Daniel will be that representative for our community. Please join me in voting for Daniel Nguyen by May 17.
