Lakeridge baseball ready to host 23rd annual Firecracker Classic
The Lakeridge baseball team is ready to celebrate and ready to make some noise.
The Pacers' Oregon Independent Baseball Association team will host the 23rd annual Firecracker Classic tournament beginning Thursday and continuing through Sunday at Gary Smith Field and Abramson Field at Lakeridge High School, 1235 Overlook Drive.
"It's going to be a fun weekend," said Lakeridge coach Marco Tavera. "It's a big production, but it's also a fun one."
The 16-team tournament kicks off with three days of pool play, then moves into championship play on Sunday. The tournament semifinals are set at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday at Abramson Field, with the tournament championship scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday at Abramson Field.

For their part, the Pacers are looking forward to it and excited about their chances.
"I think we'll get pretty far," said Lakeridge's Connor Utech. "We're hoping to make it to Sunday to get into the championship, and hopefully, win it."
"We are really starting to figure it out and ... I think going into the tournament, we can keep riding this wave and roll into it hard," added Chris Simons.
In addition to the Pacers, participating teams include: Columbia River, Central Catholic, Sunset, West Linn, Skyview, Aloha, Lower Columbia, Perth (Australia), Tigard, Sandy, Westview, Lincoln, Jesuit, Camas and Barlow.
First-round match-ups in Thursday pool play action include the following games: Lincoln vs. Jesuit, 9:30 a.m. at Abramson; West Linn vs. Skyview, 12:30 p.m. at Abramson; Perth vs. Tigard, 3:30 p.m. at Abramson; Columbia River vs. Lakeridge, 6:30 p.m. at Abramson; Aloha vs. Lower Columbia, 9 a.m. at Smith; Camas vs. Barlow, noon at Smith; Central Catholic vs. Sunset, 3 p.m. at Smith; and Westview vs. Sandy, 6 p.m. at Smith.
On Friday, the pool play lineup includes: Aloha vs. Skyview, 9:30 a.m. at Abramson; Jesuit vs. Camas, 12:30 p.m. at Abramson; Lower Columbia vs. West Linn, 3:30 p.m. at Abramson; Sunset vs. Lakeridge, 6:30 p.m. at Abramson; Barlow vs. Lincoln, 9 a.m. at Smith; Sandy vs. Tigard, noon at Smith; Westview vs. Perth, 3 p.m. at Smith; and Columbia River vs. Central Catholic, 6 p.m. at Smith.
Pool play then concludes on Saturday with the following contests: Tigard vs. Westview, 9:30 a.m. at Abramson; Perth vs. Sandy, 12:30 p.m. at Abramson; Barlow vs. Jesuit, 3:30 p.m. at Abramson; Central Catholic vs. Lakeridge, 6:30 p.m. at Abramson; Lincoln vs. Camas, 9 a.m. at Smith; Lower Columbia vs. Skyview, noon at Smith; Aloha vs. West Linn, 3 p.m. at Smith; and Sunset vs. Columbia River, 6 p.m. at Smith.
The third- and fourth-place teams from each pool will then play once more at Gary Smith Field on Sunday, with games set for 8:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. The top two teams from each pool will advance to championship play at Abramson Field on Sunday, with second-place teams from each pool meeting at 8:45 a.m. and 11 a.m., and first-place teams from each pool meeting in the tournament semifinals at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., and the championship game to follow at 7 p.m.
Tavera said that preparations for the tournament kicked off months ago, beginning with invitations to the participating teams back in October, securing details and host families for the visiting team from Perth, Australia, and more.
The Firecracker Classic tournament also welcomes a new sponsor this year in PrimeLending, a PlainsCapital Company. "It's going to be a good one," Tavera said of the tournament.
Ticket prices are: $60 for a four-day pass (family of four); $25 for a four-day pass (individual); $8 for a single day (adult); $5 for a single day (seniors 55 and older; students); and free to children 12 and younger.
