Play of the Day: The best from Dec. 8 high school basketball
There's a moment in every high school basketball game, an instant that makes the difference, a play that lifts one team to victory and sends the other to defeat.
For Dec. 8 of the 2017 Oregon high school basketball season, here's a look back at the Plays of the Day. To see complete game stories from all these contests, go to the Prep Basketball tab.
CENTRAL CATHOLIC 67, TIGARD 56: Tigard had just trimmed the Central Catholic lead to 61-53 with 2 minutes and 21 seconds left to play in Friday's non-league game, when Rams freshman Darius Gakwasi drilled a three-point basket to end the Tigard rally. It was the second time in the fourth quarter that Gakwasi sank a three-pointer to end a Tigard comeback attempt at Tigard High School.
FOREST GROVE 53, MCMINNVILLE 50: With roughly 30 seconds remaining and Forest Grove clinging to a two-point lead, the Vikings' Drake Littlefield got a breakaway lay-in off a full-court inbounds play to put the visiting Vikings up by four and virtually ice the game against their Greater Valley Conference rival on Friday at McMinnville High School.
BEND 35, ST. HELENS 32: St. Helens junior post Kaela Lee's three-point fling just inside the halfcourt line became a Lions' prayer as time expired Friday — and it nearly went in. Instead, the shot banged off the front of the rim and No. 1 Bend survived to remain unbeaten in its road opener and St. Helens' home premiere, 35-32.
JESUIT 74, SOUTH EUGENE 63: Early in the first quarter, Jesuit junior guard Will Sheaffer put home a lefty layup, then the point guard picked off the ensuing South Eugene inbounds pass and passed to a cutting Joe Wall who finished at the rim and drew the foul. Wall finished the three-point play at the line to punctuate a 13-0 run to make it 15-5 in the Crusaders' Friday home win.
ESTACADA 68, ELMIRA 57: After a baseline jumper by Estacada's Eli Crombie, the Rangers pressed Elmira in the backcourt. Falcons' guard Keegan Cook tried to find a teammate with a crosscourt pass, but it was intercepted by Estacada's Mateo Burgos, who scored an easy lay-in on the other end to give the Rangers their largest lead of the Friday game at 62-48.
ELMIRA 56, ESTACADA 31: Elmira started to pull away from Estacada in the first quarter, going on a 10-0 run that was capped by a deep three-pointer from Jadenn Blunt in the Falcons' non-league Friday win at Estacada High School.
WILSONVILLE 82, BARLOW 28: Wilsonville was in command of Friday's game from the start, and Wilsonville senior Jessica Classen hit a hook shot off her left hand in the same vein as Kareem Abdul Jabbar to bring Wilsonville's lead over visiting Barlow to 40 points. Wilsonville ended up winning 82-28 at the end of the night.
LAKERIDGE 71, ROOSEVELT 51: Lakeridge started fast, stayed tough and kept Roosevelt at bay most of the night on Friday, with the Pacers' lead cresting at 21 points when senior guard Sierra Zevenbergen took a pass on the left wing from freshman Addie Reardon and drilled a three-pointer to give her team a 40-19 lead with 1 minute, 50 seconds remaining in the first half of her team's 71-51 non-league home win.
