Registration for spring play is open now and continues through March 5 for players ages 5-12

   Play ball!

For Lake Oswego area softball players ages 5-12, that command takes on new relevance this spring. Beginning on Feb. 26, Lake Oswego Girls Softball has officially joined with Little League Softball to launch a new program this spring, with registration open now and continuing through March 5.

"We're incredibly excited about this change for our program and the opportunity to join Little League," said Lake Oswego Girls Softball President Jaime Komitor. "Oregon District 4 has been very welcoming and helpful as we work towards our inaugural season. We're all excited for the weather to turn and to get outside with the girls and start playing some softball."

Among the many benefits of chartering with Little League Softball — the world's largest organized youth sports program — Lake Oswego Girls Softball will receive the following:

• The opportunity to participate in the Little League International Tournament and the chance to play in the Little League Softball World Series at Alpenrose Stadium in Portland;

• Access to Little League University, Little League's online training and education resource.

• The opportunity to create a T-Ball Division for participants ages 5-6.

• And brand recognition with the world's largest organized youth sports program, as well as service and support from Little League International, regional and district staff members.

According to the Lake Oswego Softball website:

"This change should make for a better experience for all our girls and our league as a whole. There are some immediate differences you might notice such as a change in age group format when registering, and the teams we'll be playing against, but other than that it should be softball as usual."

The new Little League Softball program in Lake Oswego will field teams at the following levels (with age range and registration cost in parentheses). Players will be placed in the AAA and Majors levels following evaluations set for 1:30 to 4 p.m. March 18.

• T-Ball (ages 5-6, $90)

• A (ages 6-8, $120)

• AA (ages 7-9, $150)

• AAA (ages 9-11, $150)

• Majors (ages 11-12, $150)
