The Lakers use their speed to beat both the Lions and Blues in Week One of TRL action

Facing the Lions and Blues under sunny skies at West Linn High School in their Three Rivers League opener, the Lakers stepped up to win six of the day's 17 events and take second eight times to beat West Linn 90-55 and St. Mary's 77-68.

"I think we had a solid all-around performance from everyone," said Lake Oswego coach Vince Kinney. "The team has been working very hard this season and they are poised to do well in our league."

"The girls did very well," said West Linn coach Joe Cerny. "At this time, the team is coming together and improving."

The Lakers showed their speed in the sprints last week, going 1-2 in both the 100 and 200 meters, while also winning the 400 in the double-dual meet. Junior Maddie DeBorde took top honors in the 100 and 200, winning the 100 at 12.44 seconds (with junior teammate Erica Chiang second at 13.09) and coming back later in the meet to take the 200 with a time of 26.15 (this time with junior teammate Sophie Smith second at 27.61).

After her solid showing in the 100, Chiang came back in the very next event to win the 400 with a finishing time of 1:02.39.

"I was pretty nervous, but I think it was a good first run," Chiang said after her win. "At the end, I felt a little shaky, which for me is understandable because I just ran the race before this so it was more just getting back into things and getting used to doing events back-to-back."

The Lakers used their speed to win again in the 4 x 100 relay, with Gemma Pleas, Chiang, Smith and DeBorde teaming for a 50.59.

"Our sprinters were very strong and did a great job improving," Kinney said. "It was great to see Maddie DeBorde performing well and winning in all three of her events."

The Lakers also saw sophomore Ava David win the discus with a mark of 126 feet, 6 inches (with West Linn freshman Makayla Long second despite tying David at 126-6) and take second in the shotput with a throw of 34-4.75.

Senior Madison Richardson provided the Lakers' other individual victory, winning the pole vault after clearing 10-0, a two-foot personal best.

Additional runner-up finishes came from: senior Grace David in the 1,500 at 5:01.75; sophomore Kate Diedrich in the 100 high hurdles at 17.50; sophomore Lily Sieber in the 300 intermediate hurdles with a 52.44; freshman Ali Roberts in the high jump at 4-6; and sophomore Dalia Liu in the triple jump with a mark of 30-8.

For their part, the Lions made their mark in the field events, with Long winning shot put at 35-4.25 and taking second in the discus, junior Cameron Tucker topping the field in the javelin with a throw of 93-5 (with senior teammate Tayler Lundquist second at 86-9), and freshman Jordyn Selleh taking the high jump with a 4-8.

The Lions' best efforts on the track came from senior Elizabeth Paschall (second in the 3,000 at 10:55.13), the 4 x 100 relay team of Sophie Conrad, Gabrielle McVicker, Selleh and Kelleen Bromley (second with a 52.42), and the 4 x 400 relay team of McVicker, Raina Hines, Selleh and Bromley (second at 4:24.28).

St. Mary's was tough, too, getting wins from Ella Hirata, Fiona Lenth and Sarah Lyell at 800, 1,500 and 3,000, Jade Newton taking the 100 high hurdles and 300 intermediate hurdles, Mira Eagan pacing the long jump, and Lauren Look topping the triple jump.

Next up, Lake Oswego will run in the Oregon Relays at Hayward Field on Friday and Saturday, then will join Canby in a meet at Lakeridge at 4 p.m. April 18. The Lions run in the Willamette Falls Invitational at Oregon City High School at 10 a.m. Saturday, then will run with Tigard at Newberg at 4 p.m. April 18.
