Lake Oswego's Marin Penney and Layney Lombardo, Lakeridge's Summer Mickey named first team

PMG PHOTO: MILES VANCE - Lake Oswego senior Marin Penney was named first-team all-Three Rivers League after excelling with her bat, her glove and as a pitcher in 2019.Every day, every game, every inning, every at-bat and every defensive chance, the Lake Oswego and Lakeridge softball teams' best stepped up.

They battled, they made plays and they got hits when their team needed them most.

In response, the Lakers' and Pacers' best were honored with berths on the 2019 Three Rivers League all-star teams, with Lake Oswego's Marin Penney and Layney Lombardo, and Lakeridge's Summer Mickey named to the all-TRL first team.

Penney — a senior shortstop and pitcher — was honored after batting .434 on the season and finishing with 37 RBIs and 23 runs scored, with six doubles, nine home runs, 19 walks and an on-base average of .539.

"(She was the) best hitter, fielder and our starting pitcher for all four years," said Lake Oswego coach Chris Gobel, noting that Penney hit over .400 for her entire LO career. "Her knowledge of the game and her competitiveness separated herself from anyone else on our team, and obviously, in the TRL. She will be missed — her presence on the field elevated everyone else."

Lombardo — a senior center fielder — did her part by batting .370 on the season and finishing with 13 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

Laker left fielder Maddie Sticka — a junior named to the second team — stepped up, too, batting .442 on the season and finishing with 20 RBIs and 31 runs scored, with seven doubles, four home runs, 21 walks and an on-base average of .561.

"(Sticka) came to us with high-end hitting skills and fielding skills," Gobel said. "(She has) the best eye on the team and is a very good instinctive hitter and baserunner. She consistently would score from second when everyone else would never even attempt it, just because of her jump and game knowledge."

Also honored for Lake Oswego were: sophomore infielder Sophia Tosoni, honorable mention; senior third baseman Vivian Rittenour, honorable mention; and sophomore catcher Allison Sweeney, honorable mention.

PMG PHOTO: MILES VANCE - Lakeridge junior first baseman Summer Mickey won a berth on the all-Three Rivers League first team after batting .411 during the 2019 season.

For Lakeridge, Mickey — a sophomore first baseman and pitcher — was the Pacers' lone first-team selection in 2019. She won her way onto the TRL's top team by batting .411 on the season and finishing with seven RBIs and 24 runs scored, with seven doubles, 10 walks and an on-base average of .475.

"Summer Mickey is a true utility player and was unstoppable on the basepaths. She was the player this year who got the momentum going for the team offensively," said outgoing Lakeridge coach Madison Collura. "Defensively, she was a triple threat — pitching, in the outfield and at first base. It's amazing that she is only a sophomore. She is a very smart softball player."

Also honored for Lakeridge were: junior outfielder Rachel Mindt (.354 batting average), second team; freshman infielder Lexi Smith (.339 avg.), second team; sophomore pitcher Mackenzie Nelson (2-0 with 38 strikeouts and 26 walks in 47 innings pitched), second team; freshman pitcher Holly Beeman, honorable mention; and senior catcher Katherine Beeman, honorable mention.

"Lexi Smith had an impressive first year at shortstop and has a bright career ahead of her," Collura added.
