Lake Oswego, Lakeridge volleyball see 10 players honored on all-league
There were no easy days in Three Rivers League volleyball this year.
Not with three-time league champion West Linn, ninth-ranked Oregon City and Canby — the third-place finisher at the Class 6A state tournament — roaming the courts.
Despite those challenges, Lake Oswego and Lakeridge took their best shots in 2019 and made their presences felt.
In response, the Lakers saw six of their best honored (including senior first-team outside hitters Jordan Noble and Jensen Kaelin) on 2019 TRL all-star teams, while the Pacers had four players honored (led by junior middle hitter and first-teamer Kendall Baldwin).
Noble "is a smart player. She is one of our most dynamic hitters. We rely on her to put the ball away and she does," said Lake Oswego coach Corring Fallau. "She reads the court well and goes hard every play, but knows when to change things up. She will be leaving very large shoes to fill."
Kaelin, meanwhile, "fought all season, every game. She is competitive, hard-working and a leader of our team," Fallau said. "She came to win and helped us do that."
Also honored for Lake Oswego were: junior right-side hitter Kendall Kaelin (second team), junior outside hitter McKenna Joyce (honorable mention), sophomore middle hitter Morghn Monahan (honorable mention) and junior libero Audrey Wojcik (honorable mention).
Kendall Kaelin, Fallau said, "is my hardest, most reliable hitter on our team. … When she was in, we did our best to get her the ball," she said, adding that Joyce was "dynamic, competitive, and an absolute joy to coach," Wojcik "became a force in our defense," and Monahan "stopped many of the top hitters of our league where she made her presence known."
For Lakeridge, Baldwin led the way as the Pacers' leading hitter, finishing with 264 kills on a team-best hitting percentage of .327.
"Kendall had a stellar season … as one of our most dominant hitters," said Lakeridge coach Wendy Stammer "She also brought leadership to the back row as an excellent server and a solid passer and defender."
Also honored from Lakeridge were senior libero Maicy Wear (second team), senior setter Avery Ensing (honorable mention) and senior middle hitter Kally Lewis (honorable mention).
"Maicy has been a great libero for the team for the last two years in a tough league of liberos," Stammer said, noting that Wear was her team's best passer and defender. "Maicy has been a leader … with her defensive tenacity, her work ethic in practices and in matches, and her desire to be a great student in the classroom."
Regarding Ensing and Lewis, Stammer said "(Ensing) has been a quiet but strong leader … for her two years as a varsity player," while Lewis "had an amazing season … (and) is absolutely the most improved player in the last two years on varsity."
Canby junior outside hitter Daley McLellan was named TRL Player of the Year, while Canby's T.J. Schlatter was selected as Coach of the Year.
