Lakeridge, Lake Oswego skiers kick off 2020 season in Kelsey Memorial
Spirits were high, the snow was deep and the competition was great at the annual Kelsey Memorial Race, held Saturday, Jan. 4, at Mt. Hood Meadows.
And skiers from Lakeridge and Lake Oswego high schools showed their skill in the kickoff to the 2020 season.
Next up, the Pacers and Lakers will open Three Rivers League competition with a giant slalom on Timberline's Paint Brush run on Saturday, Jan. 11.
In boys action, Lakeridge's Campbell Brown took top honors in the day's giant slalom, finishing first with a time of 21.04 seconds to beat Lincoln runner-up Timur Kleebleeve by .64.
In doing so, Brown helped the Pacers take sixth place in the 23-team field with a combined time of 1:13.20. Lincoln won the team race at 1:06.33, followed in the meet's top 10 by Tigard at 1:09.00, Central Catholic at 1:10.70, West Linn at 1:10.98, La Salle at 1:12.81, Lakeridge at 1:13.20, Jesuit at 1:13.37, Oregon Episcopal School at 1:13.69, Mountainside at 1:14.12 and Tualatin at 1:14.34. Lake Oswego's boys finished 14th as a team at 1:16.80.
In addition to Brown's success, Lakeridge's other top-100 finishers included: Joey Migchelbrink (52nd at 25.93); Konstantin Karyukin (59th at 26.23); and Nate Han (74th at 26.84).
For Lake Oswego, Simon Wagner led the way with a 40th-place finish at 24.95. Another six Lakers also placed in the top 100, including: Sean Ericson (51st at 25.91); Quinn Looney (53rd at 25.94); Jack Kilshaw (82nd at 27.21); Nick Surina (87th at 27.52); Will Knudsen (95th at 27.74); and Collin Boyd (97th at 27.92).
In girls action, Lake Oswego stepped up to finish eighth with a combined time of 1:17.49 in the field of 20 teams.
The girls top 10 teams included: Lincoln 1:11.75; Wilsonville 1:12.26; Hood River Valley 1:12.88; Jesuit 1:15.62; Grant 1:15.96; Tigard 1:16.04; Central Catholic 1:16.46; Lake Oswego 1:17.49; St. Mary's 1:17.47; and Lakeridge 1:17.66.
The Lakers were led by Ariel Myton's 24th-place finish with a time of 25.12. She was followed in the day's top 100 finishers by: Jenna Accord (36th at 26.13); Katelyn Leonard (38th at 26.24); Maddie Herion (47th at 26.74); Allison Myton (62nd at 27.39); and Bella Hunter (69th at 27.88).
Lakeridge had its fair share of success, too, its efforts led by Laurel Finlay in 25th place at 25.12. She was followed in the day's top 100 by Gemma Diforio, who took 79th at 28.30.
