West Linn Thunder Strikes win tournament
The West Linn Thunder Strikes struck gold at Willamette Park in mid-June.
The Thunder Strikes, an 8-and-under softball team from the West Linn Softball Association, beat the Wilsonville Wildcats 13-5 in the championship game.
The team included Brielle Abraham, Vivien Ellwood, Lexie Ree, Kendall Mantell, Alexa Schmidt, Brooklyn Williams, Sophia Vanderberg, Ava Brogden, Roslyn King, Mick Johnson, Micki Vanderberg, Stella Morgan and Brian Williams.
Black Widows finish with a win
The Black Widows, a 14-and-under softball team from Happy Valley, finished its year with a bang, winning the end of the season county tournament at Milwaukie High School in mid-June.
The Black Widows — who finished their summer with just one loss and one tie — won the final tournament game over Molalla.
Most of the team has been playing together since T-ball and the players were devastated when they thought another season would be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Conversely, they were thrilled when the Happy Valley Girls Softball Association and the Clackamas County Girls Softball Association helped make this season happen.
This is the last year of Happy Valley Softball for most of the girls on the team as they will move on to high school next year.
The team consists of 13- and 14-year-old girls who attend Happy Valley Middle School, Christ the King Catholic School, Rock Creek Middle School and St. John the Baptist Catholic School.
Wilsonville's Fox sets national javelin record
Kylie Fox, an incoming freshman at Wilsonville High School, threw the javelin 133 feet, 11 inches at a qualifying meet in Yakima, Washington, in late June.
Fox's throw is the best in the nation for girls ages 13-14, moved her within 1.5 inches of the Wilsonville High School record, and qualified her for an upcoming national meet in Texas. Fox will also compete in a USATF Junior Olympic Meet in Florida on July 28.
Wilsonville boys basketball coach Chris Roche honored
Wilsonville High School boys basketball head coach Chris Roche was presented with the OACA Dave Johnson Contributor Award during the 2021 Oregon Athletic Coaches Association Awards Banquets in early June.
Roche shared the award with Greg Grant of Heppner High School and Tony Smith of St. Paul High School; it was presented at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande.
