Reduce stress, improve mood through laughter, yoga

SUBMITTED PHOTO - Improve your mood, reduce stress and get exercise by attending the Laughter Yoga workshop to be held at the LOACC Jan. 11.

The Lake Oswego Adult Community Center Client Services Coordinator Dana Tassos and Human Services Supervisor Berta Derman have put together many programs to help caregivers.

One of the programs is Respite, a four-hour block of time on Tuesdays that allows caregivers a break and time to visit with friends, run errands or even take a nap. They also offer Stress-Busting Program for Family Caregivers, a nine-week course that teaches caregivers how to manage stress and cope with their situations. Dana and Berta also created Family Caregiver CSI (Comfort, Strength and Inspiration) and a few times a year host special events specifically for caregivers.

This winter, they are offering a Laughter Yoga workshop, to be held from 1:30-3 p.m. Jan. 11. Developed in India by Dr. Madan Kataria, the Laughter Guru, Laughter Yoga is an exercise program that is sweeping the world. It is a complete wellness workout that offers benefits from the very first workout. Laughter Yoga combines the deep breathing exercises of yoga with laughter exercises, which oxygenates the body and brain, making you feel healthy and energetic.

The concept of Laughter Yoga is based on a scientific fact that the body cannot differentiate between fake and real laughter. We get the same physiological and psychological benefits. Clinical research conducted in Bangalore, India and the U.S. has proven that Laughter Yoga lowers the level of stress hormones in the blood.

Other benefits from practicing Laughter Yoga are improved mood change within minutes; improved quality of life and positive mental state.

You’ve got everything to gain in participating in this Laughter Yoga workshop. Space is limited, so call for a reservation. The workshop is intended for caregivers; others who wish to attend should call and be added to the waitlist.
