Willamette Women Democrats will present Oregon Sen. Majority Leader Ginny Burdick, Oregon House of Representatives Majority Leader Jennifer Williamson and Oregon State Rep. Margaret Doherty to speak on the 2017 Oregon Legislative agenda at the meeting taking place from 4-6 p.m. Jan. 12 at Celebrate Conference Center, 15555 S.W. Bangy Road in Lake Oswego.
The legislators will discuss the priorities facing our state and how they may tackle transportation, healthcare, housing and other major programs demanding attention.
Burdick was elected as the Senate Majority Leader in Sept. 2015, after serving as Senate President Pro Tempore for five years. She represents Senate District 18 in West Portland and Tigard. She is the leading advocate for gun safety issues and worked with two Oregon sheriffs to sponsor Ballet Measure 5 to require criminal background checks at gun shows, which passed in November 2000.
Williamson was elected the House Majority Leader by her colleagues in July 2015, having been first elected to serve House District 36 representing downtown Portland, much of Southwest Portland and portions of Northwest Portland in 2012.
Doherty has been a lifelong advocate for education, first as a teacher at Milwaukie High School and then by representing educational workers as a consultant at the Oregon Education Association for 22 years. In Sept. 2009, she was appointed to House District 35, which encompasses Tigard, Metzger, part of Southwest Portland and part of Beaverton.
The public is invited to hear the program. Cost is $15 for members and $20 for non-members. Light refreshments will be served. RSVP by Jan. 9 online at w2dems.com or by calling 503-656-4445.
