We at the Lake Oswego Adult Community Center know we live in an area that boasts plenty of fun and unique festivals. In fact online at you can find dozens of festivals and special events happening in our area to add zest to your leisure time.

Last summer I attended a local garlic festival I had been dying to attend for years. I don't know what it is about festivals; I feel brave and am willing to try all types of food. What are the chances I'll have the opportunity to drink garlic beer any time again? Might as well try it.

A quick scan of led me to these events: Show the Gorge Some Love and the Corn Maize at the Pumpkin Patch in NW Portland, both going on through October; a specialty coffee tasting tour in the Pearl District which you can participate in through the end of the year and an opportunity to hear the Untold Stories of the Pittock Mansion Treasures, going on through mid-November.

Local festivals and special events are an important part of the community, and help us reaffirm why we chose to live here. The events expose you to different cultures and traditions, foods and flavors, music and much more.

Some traditions are deep in meaning and culture significance, and some are just fun and silly, like the City of Tualatin's West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta. The festival celebrates our region's agriculture and ability to grow giant gourds and features a costume show, a pumpkin eating contest, pumpkin bowling, pumpkin golf and to top it all off, a race on the lake in boats made of giant pumpkins. It's a sight to see!
