Celebrate BourdainDay with me
Hey friends — Join me in celebrating Bourdain Day June 25. It is a day to memorialize Chef Anthony Bourdain, the late 'Parts Unknown" host, on his birthday. He died June 8, 2018, and his longtime pals and world-famous chefs Eric Ripert and Jose Andres encourage us to share memories using the hashtag #BourdainDay on June 25.
I met Anthony Bourdain twice, both times at The Heathman in Portland. The first time husband Mark and I went with three other couples for a dinner the Heathman staff masterfully prepared using Tony's recipes. The event had an unbelievable price of $35 per person. The food was of course delicious, and is still memorable after all these years.
I remember using a fork to eat white wine steamed mussels then sipping the broth from the shell. That's how Anthony wanted us to experience that course. Fantastic!
He came through the dining room to visit with guests and for some reason — just my good luck, I imagine — he kissed me on the cheek. I'll never forget that.
We will be having those delicious mussels on Tuesday night.
To coincide with #BourdainDay the Culinary Institute of America has announced plans to introduce a new scholarship in Bourdain's honor, supporting students interested in following in the chef's footsteps with an "international culinary experience" or semester abroad.
In April Bourdain was honored at the James Beard Media Awards, where his hit CNN show "Parts Unknown" won for visual and technical excellence. A book memoralizing Bourdain, "Anthony Bourdain Remembered" debuted May 28, with words from Barack Obama, Chefs Ripert and Andres, Jill Filipovic, Ken Burns, Questlove and others.
"These remembrances give us a glimpse of Tony's widespread impact through his political and social commitments; his dedication to travel and eating well (and widely); his love of the written word, along with his deep compassion, open-mindedness, and interest in lives different from his own," reads the book's description.
