Lakewood Center Associates are beginning a new season of luncheon meetings and programs. All are invited to join the group.

For The Review, Tidings

On Thursday, Oct. 17, the Lakewood Center Associates will welcome Joel Andersen, CEO of Andersen Construction, to its monthly luncheon meeting.

Andersen will speak about a project he conceived and completed this past summer involving a school in a village called Dixie in rural South Africa.

He encountered Hananani School while on vacation with his family several years ago. Due to torrential rainstorms, the school had been badly damaged and was partially unusable.

When Andersen met the principal of the school, Concillia Zimande, he made a promise to come back to Dixie and rebuild her school.

The project from Portland to South Africa was daunting, and the story of company volunteers from the Northwest working with local African volunteers and transporting the construction materials needed — along with the sheer grit, lessons learned, and tremendous generosity and kindness involved — is inspiring.

Stop by to hear about how combining shipping containers and construction ingenuity can bring life and happiness back to a school in great need of support.

The Associates is a group of volunteers whose mission is "to promote the welfare and service the needs of the Lakewood Center for the Arts."

The group oversees fundraising events and manages the Re-Runs shop, a consignment and gift shop selling furniture, jewelry, antiques and house wares. Re-Runs returns a generous 60% of the purchase price to the consignor. Donations of items are also gladly accepted and a tax receipt is provided.

Lakewood Center Associates welcomes new members and others to participate in the monthly luncheon programs. Sign in for this event begins at 10 a.m.

A short business meeting takes place 10:30 a.m., followed by the program at 11:00 a.m. and lunch at noon. The charge for lunch is $10 which is payable by cash or check. If you require a vegetarian or gluten-free meal, or no lunch, please let us know when you make your reservation.

If you have questions please call Jo Ann Parsons at 503-342-6702. Reservations must be made by Friday, Oct. 11, to 503-620-9092 or by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
