Is learning to paint on your bucket list? You can achieve that in just one day by taking classes through West Linn Parks and Rec, taught at the West Linn Adult Community Center.

Editor's note: West Linn Adult Community Center volunteer Mary Jean Rivera encourages all to take advantage of the classes offered at the center through West Linn Parks and Rec. She shares her painting class experiences today.

The first day it rained steadily (Sept. 7 this year), I remembered that I had better prepare to weather the dark days ahead.

The West Linn Parks and Recreation brochure happened to arrive that day, so I read it all, cover to cover, and filled in the form to register for classes.

The first was wet-on-wet oil painting on Sept. 12. I am also interested in meditation, and waltz classes, but they come later.

There are services and classes for all ages available, in many areas of interest: movies, book clubs, walking, core strength and more.

I have attended Yoga and Strength with Tiffany Carlson for nine years, and credit it with keeping me healthy.

Maybe it is time for you to try something new this year. Get a friend to go with you, but you will make new friends also in your shared experience.

The promotion for my painting class said I would leave the class with a "finished masterpiece," and I did.

The class, taught by Judy Stubb, had only three students, Jeff Mandzij, Sue Walden and me. It was taught in a classroom at the WLACC and all supplies were provided, including an excellent demonstration, guidance and advice from Judy. The evening flew by.

If you have misplaced your brochure, pick up another at the West Linn Adult Center or library and sign up now. Some classes have limited enrollment.
