New Year's Day run/walk which benefits youth in foster care; race is an out-and-back event

COURTESY PHOTOS - All are invited to take part in the Micro Marathon taking place New Year's Day at George Rogers Park in Lake Oswego.Back for its fourth year is the Micro Marathon, a New Year's Day run/walk which benefits youth in foster care. Founded by the Strealy family of Lake Oswego, the 2.62 run or walk begins at 10 a.m. at George Rogers Park in Lake Oswego. The race is an out-and-back event which runs along the Willamette River on Old River Road. Aidan Strealy, a senior at Lakeridge High School, and his cousin, Ellie Dodson, a senior at Tigard High School, return as race directors for the event.

"This is an easy run/walk," Strealy said. "It is open to all and strollers and pets are welcome. It's a nice beginning to the New Year."

This year proceeds will benefit Howard's Heart, a local nonprofit which provides basic needs for teens in foster care.Pictured are cousins Ellie Dodson and Aidan Strealy, race directors for the Micro Marathon.

"Older foster children are often overlooked," Strealy said. "People think they don't need as much support as younger children, but they do. Our goal is to raise money to buy laptops for the teens in foster care so they have that vital connection to the internet."

The Strealy family has served as a foster family for many years, and witnessed firsthand the difficulties of being in the foster system.

"Foster children live a difficult life and it is often hard for them to comprehend what is happening to their family," Strealy said. "They can be confused and angry and just don't understand, which can lead to all kinds of behavioral problems."

Adult admission price is $26.20 plus a signup fee of $2.50, and includes a Micro Marathon hat; youth ages 7 to 17 pay $20 plus the signup fee and receive a Micro Marathon hat as well. Children six and under are admitted free of charge (no hat included). Discounted pricing is available for teams of four, five or six people. All children in foster care are admitted free of charge (please let us know in advance so organizers can make sure they get a hat).
