'As the mayor I hope this contest will get our students more involved in local government.'

Mayor Russ Axelrod would like to invite all students from fourth grade to high school seniors to consider entering the "If I Were Mayor" contest sponsored by the Oregon Mayors Association.

"It's a contest that we do in the state of Oregon to get children interested and understanding about what we do as elected official It is also a great way to get ideas for what we can do in the city and what things that you think are important, and needs that you see in West Linn," Axelrod said. "As the mayor I hope this contest will get our students more involved in local government. I have seen over the years that getting children to be interested in local issues and involved in our community, they are likely to stay engaged in their community as adults. We've got the smartest, most engaged students I think right here in West Linn. This is another opportunity to keep our students interested, especially as we are all looking for ways to stay engaged and working. "I think in Clackamas County and here in West Linn it's really cool to see kids begin to understand what government does and understand what local government can do for them to make their lives better from sidewalks, and parks, to the library and clean water. I look forward to seeing all of your presentations and learning from all of you. A big thanks to our Parks and Recreation Department for helping me with the submissions and outreach. They can help answer your questions and help you with submissions. Please be safe out there."

Share your creative ideas about what you would do as West Linn's mayor. One local winner in each category will be awarded a $100 gift card and recognition from Mayor Axelrod at a City Council meeting! The winning entries will then be entered in the statewide contest for a chance to win $500! Statewide winners will receive their prize during the OMA Annual Conference August 2020 in North Bend, Oregon.
