Prior to COVID-19 Karen Galloway and Peggy Berger along with many terrific and dedicated volunteers coordinated our respite program. The program is intended to offer a family caregiver a break from caring for a family member experiencing memory loss typically though a diagnosis of dementia. The groups met on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for four hours, lunch was served, games are played, music and horticultural therapist visited along with therapy animals. As you can imagine the respite program gives caregivers a small break from caregiving and gives them time in their week to run errands, visit with friends, take a nap or just be in a quiet house. Then the pandemic hit and our respite groups abruptly stopped. If you have ever met Karen you know she wasn't going to sit back and wait for the ACC to open back up. She quickly got up to speed on how to navigate Zoom (a virtual conferencing program) and invited Peggy and the volunteers to help work out any bugs in the plan. Before you knew it Karen and her team were hosting virtual respite! It has been fabulous to be able to offer some structure in our participants' days and providing informative and entertaining content. And most importantly we get to see each other! We have missed seeing everyone so desperately and Karen and Peggy and their team devised a way for us to not only see each other but be able to provide content. If you are a caregiver and could use the benefit from our virtual respite give us a call, we have room for more.
