Jottings: Beauty In The I Of The Beholder
I try to consciously use the first person, "I" when writing, in order to own what I say and refrain from assuming another person's truth. Looking back eight decades, I realize each decade has shown me something fearsome or terrorizing to protest. I have decided now, I must accept myself as responsible for this planet and my behavior alongside 7 ½ billion other humans on Earth.
I believe this decade brings a time-ordained, evolutionary change to all material resources thoughtlessly used and spent. I believe living beyond this moment requires accepting whatever the outcome of continuing mindlessness.
Beauty in the I Of The Beholder is an idea to explore as a prompt. The prompt is born out of my belief that while hate, terror, rage, fear, grief and loss rain themselves into our environment, they transform emotions into hopelessness. I notice, at the same time, frequent experiences of beauty, falling in all around, transforming emotions into smiles, serenity, joy and gratitude.
Nature's sermons are in languages I don't always listen for, nor seek to understand. Right now, I hear nature shouting, "Call on me, let me teach you Life with contentment, delight, gentle sadness and loss along with reverence for the Life you are given. Clean my air, water; watch my seas, sands, rocks mountains and streams purify the soils that grow you, sustain you, make you beautiful."
I believe, today, you and I can use our words, thoughts, senses to project beauty into a trend toward ugliness. Please consider responding to this prompt invitation and share it with your community.
Prompt: Beauty In the I of the Beholder
Do we all perceive Beauty? If so, how, when, why, where? Do we see it, feel it, think it? What is your definition of Beauty?
Consider these questions:
— Observe whatever Beauty life brings you each day.
— Notice Beauty with your senses — touch, sight, hearing, smell, taste.
— Create an object or action using sound, movement, image, imagination — a song, picture, poem, anything having everything to do with Beauty.
— Share it with your community and notice Beauty expanding.
Here's a sample:
This morning, I decided to get my long-handled duster and take down large strings of cobweb, only noticed occasionally. It became a beautiful experience in the midst of worldly things. The webs left the ceiling with grace, flying around me, touching my arms and hands softly, silently —dancing away, attracted to the long-handled duster.
Chances are, I am the only one who experiences beauty here. That's okay, it is what this prompt is about.
