Back to School Barbecue

Colton Booster's hosted their second annual Back to School Barbecue at Colton Elementary School last Thursday night for a before school starts get-together and fun time.

CES principal, Nathan Meik, welcomed back students and families and introduced the staff before opening the school doors so students could find their classrooms and meet their teachers.

"Our hope is to make this a really fun year," Meik said. "We are having a school classroom competition called 'The Viking Game' with an emphasis on working together. It will be a way to boost camaraderie and school spirit, as well as a learning tool. More details on 'The Viking Game' will be' in a future Colton Corner.

The students were excited about the new school year.

Eli who is about to enter kindergarten said he is really looking forward to starting school because he wants "real bad to learn to read."

Audrey said math is her favorite subject and Kaylee said she likes reading. Both girls are entering third grade and will have Mrs. Sahleen.

"We really like her," they said almost in unison. "She is an awesome teacher."

Jocelyn who will have Mrs. Bleau for third grade said she loves reading and cant' wait to use the Rainbow Books, "Because reading is what I am all about."

The students all look forward to more time with friends and just a "few" parents had big smiles as they, too, look forward to the start of the new school year.

Sharing the harvest

If your garden harvest is abundant and you have more produce than you need, you can share with others by donating it to Colton's Helping Hands Food Pantry 30138 S Wall Street (Colton Community Center). Each week, the pantry serves approximately 150 local families who are in need of food security.

Volunteer and coordinator, Donna Fix, has said their clients always welcome fresh fruits and vegetables.  Helping Hands is open on Tuesdays for shoppers from 12:30-3:30 p.m., but if those hours aren't convenient, you can put your donated produce by the back door anytime on Monday or Tuesday mornings, volunteers will be in and out stocking shelves on those days.
