Jasper's Café and Saloon has been closed for weeks, reportedly due to a family emergency, but the status of the restaurant is unclear.
"Everyone wants to know what happened, but no one knows," said Rafael Rojas, owner of Molalla Market next door to Jasper's.
Both Stefanie Newton, owner of neighboring Short Cakes Consignment, and Gary Deardorff, Jasper's building owner, said Jasper's owner Chris Gilchrist closed the restaurant doors and abruptly left town for Canada to visit his mother, who was experiencing a medical crisis.
Rojas said Gilchrist gave his employees just a day's notice before the closure, citing a family emergency.
Since then, Gilchrist has not reopened the doors, and people are wondering if he ever will.
Gilchrist could not be reached for comment.
Both Rojas and Newton assumed the restaurant was closed for good, but according to Deardorff, that's not for sure.
"I don't know myself," Deardorff said. "Chris left for Canada…That was a week or two ago, and I haven't heard from him since. I'm not sure what the status is, and I haven't been able to reach him.
"I don't have any definitive answers right now," Deardorff added, noting that all he knows are the same rumors everyone else is hearing.
