KRISTEN WOHLERS - Kaitlin Gartrell (left) and Mikaela Bjorn show off their Amazing Kids plaques at OMSI on Monday, April 29.Two Molalla area students were among Pamplin's Amazing Kids honored at a special event on Monday, April 29: Kaitlin Gartrell of Mulino and Mikaela Bjorn of Colton.

Mikaela was selected as the Clackamas County Amazing Kid through Oregon State University Extension; and Kaitlin, who attended Monday but was not pictured in the group photo, was selected as the Molalla Pioneer's Amazing Kid.

The two women, who know each other through 4-H, have both overcome hardship and have used that hardship as a propeller to do good works.

For Mikaela and her family, Monday was a bittersweet day. The Amazing Kids celebration fell on the anniversary of the death of Mikaela's sister, Kirsten Bjorn, who died at four years old following a drowning accident at daycare last year.

Members of Mikaela's family attended to support Mikaela as she failed to hold back tears when her story was told at the event.

Mikaela has gone on to organize a daddy-daughter dance in the community to raise funds for kids' swimming lessons.

The area's other Amazing Kid, Kaitlin, fought through leukemia at a young age and now helps other kids through their cancer fights. She hopes to become a pediatric oncologist.

Read their full stories online or find them in the special section of last week's paper.
