Colton Corner: The dairy is back!
2 Maids-a-Milking, LLC is open in their new location at 28888 South Cox Road in the Elwood area of Colton.
Owners, Rebecca Kollias and Chelsea Skogan-Boyd, said it took a lot of family effort and work to get the facility built and open. The families used last year's tax refunds to purchase the cows and milking equipment. The new building has an onsite kitchen area and milking barn.
"Our milk goes from the cow, through an inline filter right to the refrigeration area," Kollias said. "We are really proud of our new dairy and want to provide the best quality products for our customers."
The 2 Maids-a-Milking store is self-serve. You do have to join the program before purchases, but after that the choices not only include milk in gallon and half gallon glass containers, but, ricotta, queso and mozzarella cheeses, farm fresh eggs, cream and the 2-Maids famous handmade ice cream. The ice cream flavors depend on what is left in the freezer but may include chocolate, extreme chocolate, Oreo, chocolate caramel, chocolate/peanut butter, peppermint, sweet and salty, orange cream, strawberry, blackberry, raspberry (whatever berries are in season), cinnamon, orange and tropical-flavored sherbets. 2-Maids is also offering non-dairy sorbets.
"We are working on new recipes for sugar-free ice cream," Kollias said.
The drive up to the "barn" is a beautiful drive. After turning off South Highway 211 onto Elwood Road, you continue straight past the church onto Cox Road and follow the milk jugs to the destination.
The barn is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is suggested you bring a cooler along to help transport your purchases home. If you want to place a special order, you can contact them on their Facebook page.
"This is our soft opening," Kollias said. "We will have a grand opening on Saturday, Sept. 21 when [visitors] can have tastes, meet the cows and see how our operation works."
