Damage to Colton election box not result of vandalism
On Wednesday, Oct. 23, the Clackamas County elections drop box in front of the Coltontel business office at 20983 South Highway 211 had visible damage.
A bolt from the bracket that holds the American flag was lying on the ground beside the box and the flag was constantly rattling as it was loose in the bracket.
There was speculation that it was vandalism that caused the damage but after further inspection, Andrew Jones, Clackamas County elections manager, determined that the bolt had come loose due to wind and other weather incidents placing stress on the bracket and bolts.
"We have added a bolt and the flag is secure," Jones said.
He also made note that the Colton election box has been well-used since its installation in April of 2012 and said that all election drop boxes had recently had security upgrades.
